When I began working on the embroidered elephant appliques I wanted to raise awareness of declining elephant populations. My research led me to discover that human populations are encroaching further and further into wildlands and shrinking habitat for wild elephant populations. This creates a situation for farming conflicts and people kill wild elephants in retaliation for destroying their crops. The illegal Ivory trade is still decimating endangered elephants. The suffering elephants experience breaks my heart. I can viscerally imagine the fear and trauma elephants are experiencing at the hands of humans.
