Saint Stephen was one of the first seven deacons of the Church in Jerusalem and distinguished himself by his strong faith, wisdom, and love for the poor, serving at the common tables and boldly preaching the Gospel of Christ. Accused of blasphemy, he was brought before the Sanhedrin, where he proclaimed a powerful testimony to Christ and, seeing the heavens opened and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, he confessed Him fearlessly; then he was dragged out of the city and stoned to death, praying that God would forgive his killers, and is therefore honored as the First Martyr of the Church.
